Real
Designer:
Brad “The Dad” Lanagan
Course Characteristics:
The outback town of Kalgoorlie, situated about seven hours by auto from Perth in the middle of Western Australia, was founded during the Yilgarn-Goldfields Gold Rush in the early 1890s. It is home to the Super Pit, the largest open gold mine in the country. A primitive golf course was established there by Goldfields Golf Club members in 1899. Still active to this day, the Club members commissioned Graham “Swampy” Marsh to design Kalgoorlie Golf Course which opened in 2010. Kalgoorlie Golf Course is a green oasis sitting in a harsh, somewhat inhospitable desert landscape characterized by the red soil of the gold fields located there. Since it was first unveiled, the nines have been reversed (except for the closing hole on each nine). All the holes are named and the designer has provided interesting detail and historical background regarding each name.
