WorldSwing Week 54
Third Venue
Julia Creek

In May 1998, Jason Langer released a JN5 classic, Julia Creek, a forest par 72, 7109 yard cruise through a well designed golf course. I have him credited with only a few courses such as Jungle Fever, Little River par 3, TPC St Peters and No 2 course at Waikalakei. I think all his contributions were JN5, and its a shame we didnt get to see another decade of development for GBC, because it was a good start.

One more course to go on this tour break, and we'll get back to Europe.

WorldSwing Week 54
Fourth Venue
Fire Ridge Golf Course

Lorne Attenborough can certainly create a difficult golf course. During our trip to Canada on the tour, we played Strathoy's Bear Creek as a taste of his work, and now grab your extinguisher in preparation to take on Fire Ridge Golf Course This is 7308 yards and par 72, and though long, the best decision isn't always to rip it. You will need to bend some shots to get the right approach, and an overdrive may put you in a place you can't see the green at all. On pin 5, putting is a chore. The fire grass is really a neat visual here, and its a great golf course to get burned on! I apologize if anyone reading this was involved recently in the CA fires...no intention here to make a joke about that and you're in my prayers.

Back to the European portion of the tour now.

WorldSwing Week 55
First Venue
Chiemsee South Course

Welcome back to the tour. We move from the Iberian peninsula over to Germany. Peter Müller is our designer this time, and what a design it is. This 2001 release of Chiemsee South Golf Courseis in Bavaria, and captures what I would think the country to be like. This is on my top 10 courses in JN GBC and you can enjoy many rounds here! Each hole brings something interesting to the table. We will have a few of Peters courses to play in the next couple of weeks, and you will see why he is one of the best in JN design. Its hard to believe this is a 2001 release.

This season, we have played several of his courses already:
Capcanes
Kabunai
Castillo Roque del Moro
Goodfellas

Brad,

the screenshots you post, for each course you are playing, show just how lucky those of us who still play this great game are, to have had so many wonderful designs created for us to enjoy. What's even better is that, even after over a quarter of a century, they keep coming!

Cheers

Brad

Thanks Brad! I'm enjoying my chance to revisit so many courses. This WS tour has been a true commitment to a long range plan. Pretty cool that I've made a trip around the globe and through time and then some with GBC

WorldSwing Week 55
Second Venue
Golfklub Hermannsburg

And to finish this week 55 event, we get another course from Olaf Blanke whom you may remember made our two courses in Iceland way back in Sept 2023, Gjulbrandars and Siglufjordur. Those courses were quite far from easy dates, and your time at Golfklub Hermannsburg will very much have you scrambling for your life, even in the mild conditions today. The course features greens with sudden and sometimes extreme elevation changes, forced club adjustments from tees and approaches to avoid hazard areas, and landings that are sloped and can send an otherwise good appearing drive into the deep grass or a trap. You have to choose your path well, or else your feet will get stuck in the muck.

I find this and the previously mentioned courses to be challenging, and also sometimes very irritating...but its about attitude. You need to approach this course knowing that its picky whom it gives in to, intended to be high difficulty, and don't get mental about not stealing a bird on every hole. par 4 birds are well earned and par 5's will not spread their fairways and greens for you buddy (you might just want to take your 5 and be happy with an ice bath). You need to wine and dine this course and be on your best manners.

Hole 8 tee area. You have to majorly bend your tee shot to the right if you want to get far down the fairway. Other option, choose a shorter iron and lay it up and prepare for a really long next shot.

Image
Par 3 number 16 from the green. Many greens are pretty small. If you are a good chipper, you can steal a kiss.

Image
Hole 4, showing slope. Many holes feature slopes, where you need to be in the middle of the fairway, or you will roll off to the tide...no I mean side.

Still kicking it in Europe and with another Müller miracle. Bergen im Chiemgau is a fictional course from 2002 and meets expectations. The course is fair and gorgeous. While playing, I'm reminded how lucky we all are to have had these great designers of two and a half decades.

Second Venue
Munchen-Nord Eichenried

Another great course from Peter, and this time its a forest course near Munich, Germany. Much like last week, this is a real course brought into GBC. The release is in 2003 and its short at 6345 yards. This one feels very natural and captures what is probably a good representation of the real inspiration. I think this is the last course of his we play this season, but make sure to play others on your own!
