Fire Island

Chris Clouser knows how to do a links course! Fire Island is a beautiful fictional traditional seaside links course, near Long Island New York which will challenge with uneven fairways and rolling greens. Chris had a hand in many JN courses, but I would consider this his best one.

You will be glad to play in medium winds instead of higher...

Burr Ridge Country Club

Today's tee off is on Frank Roorda's course Burr Ridge Country Club. This is a standard parkland course, but I wanted to play it since I have not played any of Frank's courses. I think he does solid work to create a pleasant experience. This is a forest course, par 72, 7071 yards from the black tees. Other courses to look at from him include:
Amoreena
Grand Beach CC
Parkwood
Stone Creek CC

Crystal Pines

This course is a treat to the eyes. Crystal Pines by Michael "Babybull" Conner, went through three versions (JN4, JN5 and this one for GBC). This version, from 2010 is par 72, 6584 yards, and in medium winds, not a difficult course. The real fun here is that you get 6 par 3's, 6 par 5's and 6 par 4's. Each of the par 5's has a real eagle opportunity. I was SOOOOO close on many....

He has several courses, and for other treats, make sure to check out Henderson Golf Course, Alpine Cliffs, and the two Durango courses.

Michael was a very active participant in our earlier Group Designs before he moved on. He was a very nice young man and very enthusiastic about designing. He started designing course's for the newer programs but I haven't heard from him for quite awhile. He always did quality designs.

Ham Hoc Tour Players Club Par 3

The Ham Hoc Tour Players Club Par 3 released September 2008 by Galen is remarkable. Its really amazing that he designed and finished this in one month! Must have been 12 hour workdays!

The par 3 hole on golf courses is typically a showcase of artistic skill in GBC and in real life. These are often the scenic views or unique challenge that forever stick in your memory. Think about Pebble Beach and the downhill par 3 towards the ocean number 7. Think about the island green at Sawgrass. Think about number 17 at Quail Hollow. Think about TPC Scottsdale and the loud amphitheater. Think about Amen Corner and its windy challenge! So, taking on a challenge to make a par 3 course is asking you to work 18 holes of magical and/or technical challenge.

Galen did a nice job of it.

There are a number of Par 3 courses available for GBC, and its always fun to play them. I enjoyed this one specifically because of the chosen distances you face. In this, you won't have to 2 iron, 3 wood and driver your way into every hole, like par 3's on some of the more challenging regulation courses. Its actually a bit relaxing, with a low to moderate level of challenge. You will want to come back and try it out in a variety of conditions.

The intro screens comment about a Ham Hoc Tour Players regulation course to follow. Did that materialize? If so, I'm not sure I have it. And if not, any chance we'll get graced in '25?

AND! How cool would it be for someone to take on the challenge of creating a GBC course with 18 famous Par 3 holes from real courses (some of the above included?!)

View of hole 11 from the tee. I could have put a view of any tee on the course and it would have looked great.

I remember this one well! Used to love the par three tournaments back in the Prodigy days when we still were using JNSE. Forget what we called them but the object was to get a hole in one which was a lot easier to do with JNSE. Russ 'Tweed Beckner came up with the idea to enhance the Ham Hoc Tour and it was a huge hit. I think at least 10 of us designers worked on par 3's for the event.

Augusta National Par 3 - 18 hole version

Who knew that Augusta National also had a par 3 course? I didn't if not for JN golf!

-------------------------------------------
From the official website:
"Here are some notable facts about the Par 3 course:

The first Par 3 Contest was held in 1960.

Participants in the Masters Tournament and non-competing past champions are invited to play.

The course saw a significant overhaul in 2022. The first five holes were rerouted so that more holes would be adjacent to DeSoto Springs Pond.

There is another, more famous body of water on the Par 3 course – Ike’s Pond. In his second visit to Augusta National, General Dwight Eisenhower walked out into what was then woods. He found what he thought was a perfect place for a fish pond. One was promptly built and named after Eisenhower.

For the first time ever, the par 3 course is part of a video game (HAHAHA! Well, I don't think they are talking about GBC, so fake news!)

The shortest hole is 90 yards (No. 4). The longest hole is 155 yards (No. 5).

There have been 107 holes-in-one made in the Par 3 Contest. Seamus Power has two of them … in the same year. In 2023, he finished his round by going ace-ace on the eighth and ninth holes.

The 107 total does not include perhaps the most famous of them all. With his grandfather, Jack, Gary Player and Tom Watson all watching, Gary Nicklaus Jr. did this.

Jimmy Walker has the course record, shooting an 8-under 19 in 2016.

No player who has ever won the Par-3 Contest has ever won the Masters Tournament."

-------------------------------------------------------

Its our luck that Jeff Reel brought this alive for us in December of 2014 (a revision from a 2000 release). This 18 hole version of Augusta National Par 3 Course has the original real world holes from 1-9, the real Fazio additions 10-11, followed by 7 holes of Jeff's own design to make a full day of it. The spirit of Augusta is well done and I think the last 7 fit beautifully with the first 11.

Of course, as you read above, this version is pre 2022 renovations.

Todays round is in strong winds, which really makes this an interesting challenge. If you land the greens in the right places, you have a much easier time of it. But miss the sweet area and your putts will have a read on them brother!

PS, I added to the website the original 9 hole Reel version from 2000. Its here:

Thank you for your participation in this forum and the comments. I particularly enjoy your reminiscences about designs and JN history. I played JN as early as JNSE and have fond memories playing it at home or at school during my medical school/residency days to get a break. Sadly, I was never a member of internet forums in those days so didnt get to know the crowd until I discovered JN6 in early 2000’s. I’m not even sure where/how I got courses for JNSE. I expect it was a dial up modem into a dedicated server someone ran. Hmmm, maybe through prodigy there were downloads, I dont know. I was on prodigy at some point and then AOL. It seems so long ago…
