WorldSwing Week 50
Second Venue
Club de Golf Valderrama

Okay, we are on a roll! The tour has another fantastic course to play. This one, Club de Golf Valderrama. From the official webpage:
"Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Sotogrande, Spain, our prestigious golf club stands as a testament to a rich legacy in the world of golf. Renowned for its championship course, meticulously designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones Sr, Real Club Valderrama has been the venue for numerous prestigious tournaments, including the Ryder Cup in 1997."

This real version of the course originally designed in 2000 by Mick Sutcliffe was updated 3/13/2002 by John Bernard (yes, that John Bernard from the last event!). The notes inform that overhanging corktrees might cause you a bit of trouble, and if you play along with me, you will see this is correct but sometimes a lucky bounce can help you!

This is an excellent course to play, and you will want to play more than 2 rounds here.

Par 4, with a tree sitting in the middle of the fairway like a goalie. This approach seen from the green makes it hard to see, but that golfer is hitting from nearly under said obstruction.

Image
Approach shot on the par 5 number 17 where you have a chance to go for it over the water, but it might be a dangerous shot.

WorldSwing Week 51
First Venue
Capcanes

We arrive near Barcelona at Cataluna, Spain to play Peter Muller's Capcanes a fictional parkland course released in May 2004. This one is 7441 yards, par 72. The overall design is very clean. The length makes the course quite a challenge in high winds. Peter has a series of nice courses including these amongst others:

Chiemsee West and South
Bergen Im Chiemgau
Golf du Rhin
Kabunai Bay Golf Resort
Mephisto

We will be playing several of his courses during our European segment.

WorldSwing Week 51
Second Venue
Valle de Ordesa

Now, finishing the midway point of the Iberian portion of the WS tour, this 6169 yard par 73 course Valle de Ordesa is given to us by Emilio Grao, and this one he claims as his fifth course. It was created May 2000, and he claims it to be a fictional course in the Huesca region of the Spanish Pyrenees.

You will find this is a course offering very low scoring in mild conditions, with short holes. If you choose to not grip and rip, you can strategically come in to the greens with short irons for precision play. In the gusty winds, the length helps you overcome the usual challenges of the blasts of air.

Enjoy your time here!

Hole 7 par 3 from the tee. Very strange place for this house to be. Gonna have a lot of broken windows, and got to walk a bit to your car :)

Image
Island green of number 17. Fairly wide landing areas allows a pretty good margin of error, even in the gusts. Par 3.

Image
Approach shot on number 4. This would be the more cautious path to bird or even eagle.

WorldSwing Week 52
First Venue
Guantanamara

In this, the second to last course in Iberia, we're playing Martin Ramshaw's eighth course, made in 2006 called Guantanamara. This one is certainly a keeper for your harddrive. Its 7338 yards, par 72 and is a woodlands fictional course in the Sierra Nevada mountains of Spain. I was surprised to find this was the first time I ever played on it.

WorldSwing Week 52
Second Venue
Castillo Roque del Moro

Our last campaign in Spain takes us to Peter Mullers really fantasy parkland golf club near Montecastillo called Castillo Roque del moro. This he claims as his third design, and its really quite mature. Its 7240 yards from the black tees and par 72. We are playing in the rain, which unfortunately gets heavier over the two rounds, so not the ideal conditions Peter may have hoped for us. You'll need to save the mild and hard for another trip.

WorldSwing Week 52
PGA Signature Event
FedEx cup finale: East Lake Golf Coures

Thank you to Galen for this excellent real course import of East Lake Golf Course, brought to life in 2017. The PGA tour visited here some time back and now the 2025 season is already underway, so I'm really late for teeing off! 2024 saw Scottie Scheffler win by four strokes after a really great season getting there.

For a few other nice courses from Galen Geier see (not a comprehensive list):
Britannia Links 2015
Drimlochs Golf Club
Ham Hoc Tour Players par 3
Piedmont Golf club

East Lake is really hard. Its quite long, 7415 yards from the black tees, so you will be challenged to reach the greens and get close to pins. Once there, you will get a variety of looks at the cup. Sometimes straight-forward and other times a tough read.

WorldSwing Week 53
First Venue
Revery

The next eight courses will be one round events to play a bunch of odds and ends for fun, instead of the periodic 'designer' elements previously visited. After, the tour will resume the European portion of the world travels before finishing in northern Africa.

The first event is at a course called Revery by James Matthews. It was created in 1999, and I remember it as one of the first courses I downloaded and played in my early days of JN6 and I think I played it also in the JNUG/JNSE days. Its a fantasy course in Northern California, and there are hot air balloons all over the place. Also, you will sometimes hear the flame blowing nearby as you try to focus on your swing. This is a fairly unique experience and worth playing, with a great fantasy feel. It is not a refined golf course seeking realism, so just enjoy the ride this early JN course provides.

To my knowledge, this is the only course for JN6 offered by Mr Matthews
