Latest project, Cougill's Keep
Re: Latest project, Cougill's Keep
Judy! The main problem as already mentioned is the current choice of the pano. It just doesn't fit for this course. Hope your feeling better

Is this better? I switched to BF pano.
Re: Latest project, Cougill's Keep
I think it looks better - at least at this portion of the pano. It has a kind of exotic wilderness look to it now.

Judy! Much better, I agree with sandwedge about diiferent angles of pano needed to say for sure.

Re: Latest project, Cougill's Keep
I'm halfway through the fine planting phase, so I thought I'd update y'all. I agree with you about the xanw pano mountains being too blue; besides that the planting pretty much covered up the bottom half of it so the river and trestle, the most interesting parts of the pano, weren't visible. I still wanted to stay with a castle ("keep") so I switched to BF, which IIRC was first used on Bohemian Lakes. I've lost the Irish look I was searching for, but... you can't always get what you want, right?
As I said in my first post, this course is a bit into the fantasy realm. I like to think that most of my (our) earlier designs could be built somewhere, but this one... I doubt it very much! This is the starting tee, which right off the bat drops 150 feet. The approach is then ~30 feet uphill. Second tee. You can compare the finished hole with the unplanted one in the first post if you wish. Ninth tee. The final hole on the f9 climbs 36 feet from tee to green. I should be finished before Thanksgiving, but I'm in no hurry to finish.

Judy! Looks good to me. I wouldn't say its pure fantasy by any means. I've seen alot of holes with elevations that may suprise some people. If you want to add some realism make sure there is a pathway of some sort that isn't to steep. I tried like heck to make Point Reyes believeable with pathways from green to next tee Then tee to flat area.

Re: Latest project, Cougill's Keep
Steve, good advice. I've pretty much mastered cartpaths that look realistic and avoid steep up/downhill or sidehill looks. I hope I have anyway!!
Here's a look at a few of the back 9 holes I've finished. I've been trying to do some variations of thick and thin planting with strategically placed trees alongside the fairways. Generally, the outter side of the course has the thicker planting.
EDIT: Error! Error Will Robinson!
This is actually the teeshot on #10. The approach shot on #11. This is a shot from the #12 green, a par 5, looking back toward the tee and approach shot.
