Pulling a Dufner

I don't usually post about the games my pards and I play, but this was one of those funny/sad games, that following so closely behind the Dufner-Bradley PGA, I thought I'd go ahead and post about it.

Yesterday afternoon Jack, Gary and I played Whisperwind. The b9 conditions was a/d/g. I had a 1 stroke lead going to #15; a birdie-bogie put me 3 up with 4 to go. Generally that's good enough for the win, but lately, the way Jack and I play, nothing is routine.

On #15 I clicked just a moment too late and pushed the ball into the rough on the right side of the fairway. I think the texture at W'wind is Monterrey; anyway it was playing sticky. From 180 I played a 3W, held up on it but sent the ball into the water behind the green. My approach from med rough was too long, and I missed the 25' comeback putt for par. Jack birdied and my lead was down to 1.

On #16, I hit over the green into a trap, hit it too hard and missed the 18' putt for par. Jack did par and now we were even.

On #17, I barely missed another 18'er, Jack had a short putt and sank it, and he took the lead by 1.

We both birdied #18, but it was too little too late. I don't mind losing (used to it) but darn I hate giving them away like that. I'm sure Jason Dufner is feeling the same way... taking nothing away from Jack or Keegan either one for playing so well at the end.

I know I heard you mention before that you have a harder time with approach shots and that putting is something you do well at - I play the same type of game I guess. But under pressure, boy those putts look a lot harder don't they ? I am usually good from 20 feet out and under on the dance floor but when playing against my girls, that safe zone shrinks to about 6 feet. In fact my girls purposely get giggling before my shot just to ice me a little before I putt - yeah they want to win Looks to me like your partner played so well at the end that it made your safe zone shrink a little too - maybe you could have sunk that 18 footer on a different day?! I try to grind it out and hope that my girls will feel the pressure and crack but nothing phases teenagers anymore One consolation for us both - our playing partners make the loss one we can laugh at! That's what makes this game so much fun - the people you get to play it with!

**Sigh.** Did it again. First round at "The Barclays" at Fabita Bay. I was cruising right along through #14; a birdie there put me at -7. Then I finished out bogey-birdie-bogey-dbl bogey. That moved me from T2 (Webb Simpson is the first round leader at -8) back to T18, 4 shots back of the lead.

Judy! At least your miscues only get you a double. Twice again and way to often of late I've recorded a triple ARRRRRGGGG . I did it on my own course Autumn Winds #8. Possibly the hardest hole on the course, dare I say one of the hardest par 4's without any water anywhere. I hit my approach about 25 feet to far right and was right behind a tree with no chance of getting anywhere close to the pin on an EXTREMELY difficult green. Then in round 2 at The Dunes on #9 I hit a bad tee shot then tried to reach the green with my driver. Came up well short and in knee or deeper rough that took me 3 shots to get out of. Oh well thats the breaks. Sometimes there's bad breaks like this tourney so far and sometimes good. Why does it feel like I get more bad then good breaks though?

I don't know Steve, I wish I did. I haven't played well since the British Open. It started with my putter (I'm discounting long approaches because that's always been a problem, but a putt inside 15-20' and dry or 10' and moist was pretty much made, but I've totally lost confidence in my putting both in tourneys and in our weekdays rounds. Of late I've probably been missing 3-4 fairways/round; I can't seem to get the aim right or the ball is traveling much further laterally than it should be (in MOI.)
Maybe I need to seriously read some of Tiger's complaints and come up with some new ones, you think?
