Are the patches necessary for the betterment of the game and if so, how do I download them into this sim? Thanks.

As with all software, the PGA2000 software was not perfect when first released (still isn't). The patchs fix some minor problems that cropped up after the initial release of the game software. You should, at a minimum, download and apply the 3.3.4.5 pacth available in utilities area. Without the patch, you cannot play in an on-line, multi-user environment.... but the patch fixes some other software defects too.
Downloading the patch uses the same procedure as downloading courses (see related post). After downloading to say, the desktop, simply double click on the patch and it will apply automatically.
