Go ahead Brian. I don't think anyone will try to change anything because of that knowledge. I didn't realize the great lakes had cliffs along the shorelines that big.

Alright this should look familiar: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source= ... 66047&z=15

It's called Deathdoor Bluff (or just Door Bluff) and it's on the west side of the tip of the Wisconsin peninsula. It's part of the Niagara Escarpment: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Niaga ... nt_map.png, which also creates Niagara Falls in the Eastern part of it.

I was originally thinking about getting something from the Monterey area in California near Pebble Beach but then I thought that area was over used. So having been to Door County on vacation the last couple years I knew there were some nice areas there that could look like ocean too. I considered several areas but this one seemed like it had the best surrounding geography to go along with the cliffs. I was actually there this summer but I didn't take the picture I showed. It was probably taken from a boat. There are so many trees at this location that you can't see much of anything on land. Just a couple miles south is Ellison Bluff, another area I considered, where I took this picture.

I also considered the areas just south of Fish Creek and Egg Harbor. The advantage to these locations was that the cliffs are slightly inland so you can make holes that play over the cliff. There is actually a golf course south of Egg Harbor that has two holes that do just that. Here's a pic I took of one of them this year.

In the end I chose Deathdoor Bluff because the entire plot just had a lot more movement in it and it seemed like a great place to develop a golf course. I also thought Deathdoor Bluff made a great name for a golf course and if I had entered the contest I would have named my course that.

I've always wanted to visit that part of Wisconsin, but even though I'm in neighboring Michigan, it's quite a trip to get there. I guess I was somewhat close to the actual location with my design, almost exactly due east over the pond!

Also, I just checked my course. 650,525 points and 281,757 2d objects. It does take a bit to save and to compile, but it's worth it. I was originally going to have the whole course be dunes/scrub with LOTS of grass and bushes. The final product is probably half scrub, half woods. I think my object count could have easily been over 500,000. I'm glad I bought a new PC recently because my old one would never have handled this!

One more pic of the approach to the par 5 9th. Only 4 or 5 holes are effected by the coast, the rest are pretty much Pine Valley/forest in style.

When do we submit our two feature hole walk-through's with an explanation of strategy etc.?

Duncan ! Your featured holes walk through should be submited with your course when you upload it. By the way nice work. How many bunkers do you have on that hole?

Thanks Steve - too many ;) (17)

I'd be keen to see them posted here to generate some discussion if anyone else agrees? The fun thing about previous competitions were the feedback/learning and genuinely interesting debate... just my thoughts.

Cheers
