Claude Harmon, head pro at Winged Foot Golf Club, was perhaps the greatest club professional ever. He won the 1948 Masters, was third in the 1959 U.S. Open and twice reached the semifinals of the PGA Championship, all while developing a reputation as a top teaching professional.

In 1552, Archbishop Hamilton of Scotland was granted a permit to raise rabbits in the town of St. Andrews as long as the rabbits and their grazing didn't interfere with the citizens' ability to play golf on what is now the Old Course.
