Having 185 yards left for his second shot at Quaker Ridge Golf Club in Scarsdale, New York, Rick Warner decided to hit a 9-iron. Not too many people can hit a 9-iron that far, but Warner could. What was surprising was the size of the divot. His playing partner, Jim McLean, had it checked out and it measured 22 inches long and 15 inches wide. What's more, the ball flew over the green.

Tiger Woods earned fame for winning three US Amateur titles in a row while at Stanford, but he wasn't the only Bay Area player to accomplish that feat. From 1980 to 1982, future LPGA Hall of Famer Juli Inkster of San Jose State won the US Woman's Amateur titles.

Founded in 1766, Royal Blackheath Golf Club, southeast of London, was the first golf course in England. Golf was played in Scotland at least three centuries before.
