Re: CustomPlay Golf

Dean from CPG posted this message today to someone asking about buying the game.
Apologies for the delay, if you contact me directly - dean@redchaingames.com I'll try to help you out. As discussed earlier we are no longer selling the game, we just need to finalise how best to make the full version available as a free to play piece of software.

Brian,

I see World of Golf is now on this site. Wondering if this is the same game and if it was ever released free as mentioned in this post. If so, it might give us GSC guys and gals a chance to try it out and even contribute to the community for future releases. Thoughts?

Is there a huge learning curve between PGA and WGC? I think I would like to work with both, as I love the better, more realistic graphics of WGC. Is it harder to learn?

Yeah it's the same game. There's been no news on the free version unfortunately. I don't know if that deal fell through or what.

As for the learning curve do you mean designing or playing? For playing, I can only speak for the mouse swing as I don't click, but I would say its similar difficulty but you won't be able to just jump over. The hook/slice push/pull works the same as in PGA but it is a bit more sensitive. There isn't a tempo factor to full shots like there is in PGA though, you can swing as fast as you want to. You do have to have good tempo on less than full swings though. Judging a 50 yard pitch shot is tough and very realistic. There are stance options but you can't just dial the shot in with numbers. The biggest difference I think is putting. You have to have good speed and a great sense of touch like in real life because you won't be making most of your putts.

For designing there are some definite advantages especially for creating real courses. It has a built in overlay for satellite images so you only have to set it up on your plot once. It also allows for better importing of elevations. Blending textures is much easier to do and you can overlap texture so you don't have to fight with making sure shapes don't cross like in PGA. The main disadvantages in my opinion are the lack of keyboard shortcut keys so it takes longer to do simple things like deleting or duplicating and the fact that it's harder to do custom art because to look good up close it has to be 3D. You can do 2D but it only looks good on small grass objects or for bigger things in the distance where it's not in play.

Does anybody know how much for the latest version that has already been released?

I thank all of you for making that possible. Unfortunately, I am going to take a pass. Not a big fan of playing any game through a portal - prefer to play it without having to be connected to the Internet. Just the same, since I asked a lot of questions, I am very grateful for the helpful answers, responses and making it available - wish the developers the best of luck in keeping their product out there :)

You do have to download it through the portal but once you have it you can make a shortcut directly to the EXE and run it offline.

Thanks Brian - I will talk to the girls and see if they might have an interest in trying the game out then.

I got it going only to discover it doesn't work to well on my pc. I get to take about 1 shot before the game crashes. Oh, well, PGA is still alive and kicking as long as I am around, lol!
