Former U.S. Army Sergeant Orville Moody developed a reputation as a good ball-striker but a lousy putter on the PGA Tour. Moody somehow managed to win the 1969 U.S. Open despite his poor putting and later went on to popularize the long putter on the Senior PGA Tour.

In what sponsors called " one of the world's slowest growing sports," the Port Royal Golf Club once held a Troll Tournament. It consists of throwing a golf ball around the Bermuda course. The record was set in 1975 when Joe Flynn of Needham, Massachusetts, scored an 82. Of the 25 entrants that year, only nine finished. The others complained they had thrown out their arms.
