Just Questions

Post by Captain Nemo »

Thanks Viper for creating and managing this eclectic Golf Site. Today I downloaded JN6 and it seems to be working OK, except for the swing meter which seems really fast on chips shots and puts. I have always liked that game, mainly because of the utility of the aiming arrow on the long shots. Great to be able to see if you will hit an object and then change the trajectory and shape of the shot accordingly, so I was really disappointed when I originally could not get it to run in Win 10. Questions follow:

I was wondering what visual effects are improved/incorporated by the Wide Screen Patch. Does it remove the "chubby" look of the players and improve the detail of the Plantings and other objects?

Is there any way to slow down the swing meter?

I see there are 2 course designs in the works. Are there any course designer creations from the past available?

No probs Captain.

For swing meter, go to your golfer, then "edit golfer" and then "set skill." Here you can change the swing meter speed to your liking. Every golf game should have this. The less skill points you set, the more you get penalized for missing the snap. Every golf game should have this too!
Some people say GBC is easy but they have their skill points piled up. It's an excellent game with great customization.

Can't help with how well the HD patch works as I don't use it. It will give you sharper graphics if your monitor matches the same resolution as the patch offers. However, you can remove the chubby look even without the patch by setting your graphics card scaling to either "aspect ratio" or "no scaling." See the thread below for a full explanation.

Viper - Update Info:

Regarding resolution improvement. "No Scaling" selection reduced game size on my 27" Monitor to about 21" - still widescreen (1-1/2" black bars top and bottom and 2-1/2" black bars each side. However, course detail improved such that I don't feel I need to incorporate video mod.

On the other hand (probably because I'm still viewing a widescreen) neither "No Scaling" or "Aspect Ratio" resolved the chubby player issue. Not a big deal as I've sort of got used to it. Maybe someone who has been playing in "Widescreen can comment on my chubby assumption?

Regarding the Swing Meter, I decided to drop down one setting to "Fast". Still working on perfecting that, but I did shoot a 75 in my 1st full round as "Scott". I did try a few holes on the "Medium" speed setting, which is a lot easier accuracy wise, but I found the reduced club distances too penile.

Currently starting a round with me as a designed human player (Fast Swing Meter, but set up trajectory as straighter and higher than "Scott". It will be fun to see how that goes.

Not sure of why you have chubby players. Here are two pics of mine using the wide screen patch. The picture is full screen and I think looks great. i have a 27 inch Samsung monitor set at 1920x1080 at 59.94 hz.

Thanks for the info aristocrat48:

I have a Nvidia card and MSI Monitor (1920 x 1080) and I just discovered that at HD 1080p, 60hz and "no scaling" the players are normal but the game screen is fully letter boxed to create a 4/3 aspect ratio. I was wondering if you selected "apply to GPU" for your settings? I have not tried that yet as I was apprehensive about the results, so my selection currently is "apply to monitor". Otherwise I have no clue how to achieve that full screen vertical your pics show. I am using Windows 11 so maybe that is the problem? I have had to resolve several issues with various apps since upgrading (?) to it a few months ago.
Cheers :D

I am also running Windows 11. As far as applying to GPU, you kind of lost me there. Here are a couple pics of my settings that may help and also the directions for the wide screen patch. Maybe you missed a step.

Aristocrat48:
My selections matched yours (except for a number under 'Colour Rendering" which I would assume would be irrelevant and could not change anyway):. Those settings gave me a full widescreen rendering. I did discover that the letter boxed renditions (with properly rendered players) were dependant on which refresh rate was selected. 119hz (my PCs original default) produces a smaller 4/3 box than 100hz (which has 1" bars on the vertical axis - close but no cigar :bg:) . All the other available refresh rates were full screen; so currently I am sticking with 100hz.

Captain,
You do need to apply the settings to GPU or it does not affect the game. Once you apply to GPU, then the chubby player will be gone with either Aspect Ratio or No Scaling. The difference will be that No Scaling will give you a smaller game screen with black bars all around the game screen but the game graphics will be very sharp. Aspect Ratio will give you a game screen filling to the top and bottom of your screen with black bars on the sides. This will however give slightly less sharp graphics but will give you a larger game screen. This is all with no HD patch.

Thanks for following up Viper. :)

I didn't mention GPU setting because It gave me the smallest box and didn't seem to provide better graphics. Aspect ratio just gave me full screen on all settings (basically not working). Already had incorporated the HD patch. I saw you had posted info on posting screen shots so I will post one of my best results when I figure out (if i live long enough) your posting instructions. Life is short and then you die!. :bg:
